Waterdikkop - Spotted Thick-knee. (Burhinus capensis). Photo: Ben van der Horst. Thick-knees are breeding at the moment. They are plover-like birds with large yellow eyes and long yellow legs. Please be careful when driving at night or early mornings. They are secretive during the day but as they eat insects as a dietary supplement to seeds, they are vulnerable on the Dana Bay roads. |
Jackal Buzzard - Rooiborsjakkalsvoël. (Buteo rufofucus). Photo: Scout Guard. We have ALWAYS had Jackal Buzzards breeding in Dana Bay Conservancy and they can often be seen soaring on the wind currents above the kloofs. They nest on cliff ledges. Our Green Belt areas are an ideal hunting ground for these raptors. They help to keep our environment free from pests such as rats and mice. Don't use pesticide to rid your plot of rodents. Pesticide poisons our natural raptors such as owls as well - keep Dana Bay Conservancy pesticide free! |
Bushbuck - Bosbok (Tragelaphus scriptus) Photo: Scout Guard Bushbuck are associated with riverine and thickets in the vicinity of water. Males are usually darker in colour than females. Bushbuck have transverse lines on the back and white spots on the flank and thighs. Males shoulder height approx. 80cm and females, 70cm. Only males have horns. |
Thank you to the Garden Route Casino Community Trust for providing the Conservancy with "stealth cams". Beware poachers, we may be watching you! A reward of R1000-00 is offered to any information leading to the successful arrest and prosecution of poachers (hunting and snaring) in our Dana Bay Conservancy.
