About Dana Bay Conservancy

Our Motto:  we care about our Environment!

Our Logo:  The African Black Oystercatcher

The Western Cape's first urban Conservancy since 1998

One of the great pleasures of being a resident or a visitor of Dana Bay Conservancy is the discovery of a variety of wild animals in a residential area. We are fortunate and proud to be graced with numerous indigenous animals and a host of endemic Fynbos. In a small ecosystem such as Dana Bay Conservancy we have a microcosm of the Southern Cape in all its diversity within the confines of our municipal boundaries. We should be doing our utmost to preserve our SMALL FIVE. (Adapted from former Newsletters)

  1.  Bushbuck. This icon represents all the furry mammals, including Greysbokkies, Grey Mongoose, Caracal, Civet, Cape Clawless Otters etc., in our gardens and open spaces.
   2.  African Black Oystercatcher, our logo. These beautiful birds represent all our avian species. The majestic Jackal Buzzard, the ubiquitous Cape Spur Fowl (Francolins) and the tiny Sunbirds. "Feathered Friends"  is a beautiful and unique bird booklet for sale from the Conservancy.
   3.  Tortoises. The Angulate and Common/Southern Padloper represent the Conservancy's reptiles. Puffadders, Cape Cobra, skinks, lizards and Agamas. Not very welcome but boost a healthy ecosystem. This group represent the amphibians including the Arum Lilly Frog and endangered Cape Platanna.
   4.  Toktokkies represent the myriad of insect life providing food for others as well as creating compost.. Insects contribute to the health of the environment, encourage dispersion of seed and pollinate plants.
   5.  Leucospermum praecox, endemic pincussion (Red Data Book status: vulnerable). This plant represents all the Fynbos species that rejoice in their diversity and exclusivity including Ferraria crispa, Bonatea speciosa (Orchid) and the illusive and very rare Disa hallackii (Orchid - photo) that grace our conservancy.
Bottlenosed Dolphins represent our fragile marine ecosystem. Our beloved dolphins provide us with endless entertainment and their enthusiasm for life remind us just how important it is to play. This group represents our resident Humpback and Bryde's whales, Humpbacked dolphins, sharks and fish. Our Southern Right whales grace us with their stately presence during the winter months when they arrive to calf and mate. We, as custodians, are the last generation that can still make a positive contribution to ensure that through conservation and preservation of this rich diversity placed in our care, our heirs will enjoy that which brings joy to our hearts and pleasure to our lives.

Words to Live by:
Conservationist Ian McCullum said  "I believe the loss of any species comes with a psychological price.  It is something akin to a loss of soul and the suffering emotion that goes with it - shame... the same shame that will come with the chilling realisation that their extinction had something to do with our species.  There is only one state of poverty greater than that linked to hunger and basic human needs.  It is the poverty of human indifference".

Our actions today influence our environment tomorrow.

Leave a legacy for future generations.
