The International Coastal Cleanup week is held every year in September. This year we have chosen Wednesday, 14 September 2011. We will all meet up at 9h30 at First Beach in Dana Bay.
It is vitally important to our marine environment to make, especially our children (and future leaders) aware of what a great problem rubbish has become. It is not only the rubbish left behind after picnics or fishing on the beach, but we forget that everything thrown out of a car window eventually enters our river systems and ends up on our beaches.
A Humpback whale washed up on our beach a couple of years ago. After an outopsy had been done, it was found that 27kg of plastic had ended up in her stomach - she died of hunger!
Sea turtles live off jellyfish and eat bluebottles. They ingest plastic and die. Our sea birds get snared by masses of fishing line floating on the rocks. They either die when the tide comes in or lose their limbs trying to survive.
