The Cross Roads Project in Dana Bay Conservancy
Over the time span of a week, two of our Conservancy’s Grysbokkies have been knocked over by vehicles. During the same week 3 Francolin were killed. The Conservancy Committee has decided to start a Cross Roads Project. This is a passive way of protesting against this needless slaughter of our wildlife.
To pick up these dead, dying or mangled animals is heart-breaking to people who care. Please act responsibly and drive with care and consideration. After all, we are supposed to be the superior species! We request the public to participate in this action. Please do not remove the crosses planted along the roadside, but plant your own where you know an animal that you have cared about has been maimed or killed. This is an awareness campaign against speeding in our Conservancy.
The photos depict the only antelope that was rescued, survived and set free in our Conservancy. He is a young ram and has been named “Blessings”. We thank the drivers who do manage to report accidents to the Dana Bay Conservancy Committee members.
Our heart-felt thanks to Dr Stander, Dr De Graaff and the SPCA who are always so willing to help. For animal (including birds) emergencies in the Conservancy please call Norman Scarrott: 076 124 3380.
NB!!!
Data Collecting still ongoing.
Please, we need YOUR help. All we ask of you is the minimum of your time. The more people involved, the more accurate the results!
Take a form from the Dana Bay Video Shop and....
Note every animal you see, the time, the place and if there are any significant markings (individual traits) as well as the number (maybe a Bushbuck ram and doe = 2animals). The same with our beautiful fynbos which is just starting to flower. This is a good time to take photo's and note the exact location of where they are growing. The Conservancy is starting a database to estimate how much fauna and flora we have left in Dana Bay Conservancy. This will also help us to preserve very rare species of Fynbos eg the orchid, Disa Hallackii.
The forms may be collected and handed in every month-end at the Dana Bay Video shop. (Thank you Cathy Gerber for once again coming to the rescue).
Your co-operation will be greatly appreciated
